Heat Pumps

For climates like the Pacific Northwest, with moderate heating and cooling needs, air source heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners. Like your refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your warm house.  During the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your cool house into the warm outdoors. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide equivalent space conditioning at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating conventional heating or cooling appliances.

Maintenance

Like all heating and cooling systems, proper maintenance is key to efficient operation. Once a year preventative maintenance is the best way to make sure that the system is functioning properly.  The difference between the energy consumption of a well-maintained heat pump and a severely neglected one ranges from 10% to 25%. Clean or change filters monthly or as needed, and maintain the system according to manufacturer’s instructions. Dirty filters, coils, and fans reduce airflow through the system. Reduced airflow decreases system performance and can damage your system’s compressor. Clean outdoor coils whenever they appear dirty; occasionally, turn off power to the fan and clean it; remove vegetation and clutter from around the outdoor unit; clean the supply and return registers; and keep all indoor registers open.

Installation

Our heat pumps are made by EverRest, Goodman, and Maytag and come with a 10 year limited warranty on parts. They are rated one of the highest by consumers.  Heat pumps may be able to use the same ductwork as your current heating system. A great companion to our heat pump system is an AprilAire filtering system which includes a new state of the art filter that will help improve the air quality in your home, vastly decreasing the impurities in the air.  This makes it healthier air to breathe and who doesn’t want cleaner air? Also the AprilAire filters only need to be changed once a year, making maintenance and service more convenient for you, as one service call takes care of it all.

Emergency Service

We strive to be available any time of day or night for emergencies. We stock our trucks with a wide variety of parts so we are able to repair most units on the first visit. We can repair and service any brand of electric, gas, or oil furnace as well as ducted and ductless heat pumps. We make every attempt to serve Tillamook County with emergency service on the same day that we receive calls.

Common Questions

What can I do to protect my unit and how can I keep it clean?

Trim plants and bushes around the unit to provide at least eighteen (18) inches of clearance for airflow. Keep pets away from the outdoor unit, as the acid in pet urine is a corrosive that will deteriorate the metal. Have the unit serviced annually to maintain cleanliness and ensure proper air flow.

What is the lowest temperature heat pumps will work in?

Heat pumps are still 2.5 times more efficient as electric heat at 17 degrees outside.  If sized properly heat pumps will need help or “back up” heat when outdoor temperatures reach the low 30’s to upper 20’s.

When the thermostat senses it needs additional heat it will activate the electric heat in addition to the heat pump.

If an electric furnace is 100% efficient, how can a heat pump (that runs on electricity), be more efficient?

A heat pump moves existing heat from outside.  A furnace “burns” fuel or power to create heat.  It is more efficient to move heat than create heat.
