A Tillamook Family Tradition since 1974

Phil McMahon graduated from Tillamook High School and attended trade school specializing in sheet metal. While going to trade school he apprenticed at several Portland-area sheet metal shops. After getting his sheet metal journeyman’s card he worked a variety of jobs including installing residential and commercial heating systems in Portland and at a custom sign shop.

In the summer of 1973 Phil returned to Tillamook with his bride of 4 years, Linda, and 3 children; Crystal, Jim, and Shiela. In January 1974 Phil and Linda opened McMahon Heating & Sheet Metal. In 1980 Phil and Linda moved the business to its current location at 2711 3rd Street and changed the name to “P & L Heating & Sheet Metal.”

In 1988 Phil and Linda’s youngest daughter, Shiela McMahon, graduated from Tillamook High School and began school at Linfield College where she met Matthew Zerngast. In the summer of 1990 Matthew started working at P&L during summer vacation and after graduation in 1992 Matthew and Shiela married.

In 1993 Matthew and Shiela decided to move to Tillamook to buy the family business. “It didn’t take long to realize that I had just dropped into something I really loved doing,” says Matthew.

In 1995 Matthew and Shiela welcomed to the world their first daughter Marissa, who was followed in 1998 by her sister Ryley. Both girls were raised in Tillamook and attended Tillamook High School just like their mother and their grandfather before them.  They both have been very close to the business and help maintain the family atmosphere.

In July of 2000 Matthew & Shiela bought P&L and have operated it since then. “Our primary concern is keeping the tradition of honesty, integrity, and customer service alive and well.”
